Bullying in Film
Besides the made-for-TV movie by ABC Family (mentioned here), there aren't any films out there that depict cyberbullying specifically. There are, however, quite a few films that depict bullying in general.
Mean Girls
One of the biggest films to come out recently about bullying is the 2004 film entitled Mean Girls. This film was written by Tina Fey and is based off the novel Queen Bees and Wannabees by Rosalind Wiseman. The storyline follows a new student named Cady (played by Lindsay Lohan) who gets involved with her new school's group of mean girls AKA "the most popular girls in school." Cady soon learns why these girls are considered "mean girls" and why she doesn't, and does, want to be just like them.
This film shows examples of face-to-face bullying, bullying using technology (the telephone), and bullying via a text source created by these "mean girls." It may not necessarily directly focus on cyberbullying, but it focuses on both basic characteristics of bullying in general and things that could be used in the cyberbullying forum. For example, the text medium presented in the film could easily become a website or a blog post.
While this film did not directly discuss cyberbullying, it's a great example of bullying in general. It shows multiple representations of how bullying takes form and one of these can be online. As mentioned before, many of these forms can be done online. This film is just a great example of bullying, of all types, and how it affects people.
